What R-value would you like?

We normally recommend R3.0. The National Construction Code minimum for added ceiling insulation in our coastal-Queensland climate zone is only about R2.5 (a little more for a dark or unventilated roof), so most homes really don’t need a big number. Polyester batts go up to R4.0; anything higher is pumped cellulose. Been told you need R6? Pick it and say so, and we’ll tell you honestly whether it’s worth the extra.

Batt width / joist spacing

Batts come in two widths to suit the ceiling joist spacing — 430mm or 580mm. Steel-frame roofs are battened much wider (around 900–1200mm centres), which is one reason we pump cellulose into them rather than lay batts. Not sure? We'll measure on site.
